Dashed training ride

5 January 2011

With the snow still on the roads and icy at the sides, I have decided not to go out in the early mornings.  Instead, I am going to do training rides in front of the TV.  This morning I set up the Trek and attached the spare Edge connections.  I have put the originals on to the Specialized.  I started spinning but it was giving my speed at a whopping 5 mph  and my cadence at 160%.  What is going on?  I thought it was missing registering the wheel going round.  After spending some time trying to figure out what was wrong, I read the installation manual and then realised I had the transmitter the wrong way round.  The wheel was measuring cadence and the pedal measuring speed.  By the time I had set everything up correctly, it was too late to train before starting work.  Now that the bike is set up fully, I shall do my first training ride of the year after work.

Walking the walk

28 February 2010

Well, today, I walked the walk.  I changed the Miller Place ride to take a different route up from Port Jefferson instead of 25A.  I knew it was a steeper climb than 25A but I didn’t know what to expect.  Anyway, I hit it in the wrong gear and even though I was in the lowest gear for the middle cog, I could not shift over to the smaller cog on the front.  To be honest, I couldn’t remember which lever to shift and was scared to shift the wrong one.  As it was, I decided to stick with the 10th gear I was in and it got tough, really tough. Deciding to risk personal embarrassment over a busted heart, I stopped the bike and walked the rest of the way.  There was a corner ahead and I didn’t now what was around the corner and how far it went.  When I got there, I saw that it didn’t go that much further.  I was soon back on the bike and continued the ride.  Next week I’ll be in a lower gear for sure! Cheating, cheating virtual buddies!

24 January 2010

Nice piece of coding they, Garmin, have in that there bike computer, Edge 705!

I have the setting on the Edge that the timer stops when I stop and it starts again when I start.  I know that for the brevets I will have to take that option off and keep the timer running constantly.  However, I would have expected that the virtual buddy would have the same setting.  But no, it doesn’t stop at red lights, it doesn’t stop at stop signs and it doesn’t miss turnings!
